Lithuanian Chocolate Truffles With Condensed Milk

These Chocolate Truffles With Condensed Milk are one of those quietly brilliant treats that say everything about Lithuanian cooking without saying much at all. Simple ingredients, no baking, no fuss, and somehow still deeply indulgent. They sit somewhere between a classic Lithuanian dessert, known as Tinginys, and a clever kitchen shortcut, the kind of thing you make when guests are already on their way. They’re rich, chocolatey, and unapologetically old-school. And once you’ve made them once, you’ll understand why they’ve been passed down through so many Lithuanian kitchens.

Ingredients

  • 400 g (14oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 30 g (¼ cup) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 40 g (3 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted
  • 400 g (12 oz) plain cookies*
  • 1-2 teaspoon brandy optional
  • chopped nuts, shredded coconut, crushed biscuits, to roll in

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, mix the condensed milk with melted butter, brandy (if using) and cocoa powder.
  • Blitz the plain cookies in a food processor and add the crumbs to the condensed milk mixture. Mix well.
  • Oil your hands and shape small balls of the mixture (walnut-sized), rolling them in finely chopped nuts, shredded coconut or crushed biscuits (more ideas in the article above).
  • Chill for a couple of hours and enjoy!

Notes

In Lithuania, we use plain cookies, called "Gaidelis", and you can get similar square-shaped cookies in some larger grocery stores or Polish/ Eastern European Food stores. However, you can also use digestive biscuits, rich tea biscuits, Marie biscuits, Tostadas or even stale shortbread (fresh shortbread will crumble too much). Graham crackers might also work.
